Proper Hydration Is Important For Good Oral Health

Since our bodies are made up of 60% water it is important that we replace the reserve as it is lost. The water in our bodies carries the blood to the major organs that are necessary to sustain life. If the body becomes dehydrated it can no longer perform properly.

Dehydration is described as “ a harmful reduction in the amount of water in the body.” Severe dehydration may be brought on by some symptoms of illness such as diarrhea or vomiting or it could be the result of sweating from overexertion. If you have been exercising for some time and begin to cramp up or feel faint lie down in a cool place, elevate your feet and remove outer clothing. Drink 2 quarts of cool water over the next 2-4 hours while at rest. It could take up to a day to fully replenish your body’s water supply.

Babies and older adults are more likely to become dehydrated. Small bodies use more water at a faster rate and their immune systems make them more susceptible to sickness. Seniors may suffer from kidney disease or they may be taking a medication that increases their production of urine.

Water is essential to the maintenance of our oral health. Drinking a sufficient amount of water can prevent dry mouth, support the natural flow of saliva and help to wash away bacterial plaque.
